Did you know 1 in 7 Canadian men will develop prostate cancer during his lifetime? If you want to ensure your prostate is in tiptop shape, here are the Top 3 signs of prostate cancer:
- Changes to your flow – The prostate is a small gland about the size and shape of a chestnut. It helps with the production of semen, and sits just below the bladder and surrounds the urethra, the tube that carries pee from the bladder through the penis. If you’re finding it difficult to tinkle, you suddenly have to go all the time, or you never feel like you’re empty, go for a check-up.
- Blood – Blood in your urine or semen is not normal. While it could be caused by infection or inflammation, it’s also a sign of prostate problems. Better safe than sorry.
- Loss of bowel control – If you’re dealing with Number 2 problems, your doctor definitely needs to know what’s going on. While rare, a tumor pressing on the spinal cord can lead to weakness in the legs or feet and a loss of bowel or bladder control.
On average, 58 Canadian men were diagnosed with prostate cancer every day in 2017. Like most things in life, the prostate is something that guys rarely think about until it’s a problem. So do yourself a favour and avoid any surprises by asking your doctor for a PSA blood test and a simple prostate exam.
