  1. Wonderful article, professional research has been done. Detailed and clear info to understand covid vaccine administration
    Thanks Razan

  2. thanks for this advice. What still leaves me apprehensive is the uncertainty of long term effects. I know how complicated the body is, especially the immune system and I am concerned with the effect of altering a natural system with millions of years of evolution. I don’t think there is a clear answer to this but it is what is primarily stopping me from getting it. Any comments? also, if everyone is vaccinated, how will we know long term negatives, such as overly taxing our immune system, when we don’t have a control (unvaccinated) group to compare against

    1. Great question!

Always seek the advice of a local healthcare provider you trust if you have additional questions or concerns.

At this time there is no long term data available that we can use to assess any potential, extended effects from taking an approved COVID-19 vaccine. However, it’s important to note that mRNA vaccines have been studied and used for decades without showing long-term side effects as explained by Immunize BC.

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) also states that, “Researchers have been studying and working with mRNA vaccines for decades. mRNA vaccines have been studied before for flu, Zika, rabies, and cytomegalovirus (CMV). As soon as the necessary information about the virus that causes COVID-19 was available, scientists began designing the mRNA instructions for cells to build the unique spike protein into an mRNA vaccine.”

Lastly, Canada’s approval system for vaccines continues to be as rigorous as ever; historically proving that vaccines that go through our system are safe, even for the long-term.

Factoring in this information may be helpful when it comes time to get your COVID-19 vaccine.

  3. After getting your second dose, how long would it take to be fully protected? Is it safe to start seeing select family or friends without a mask once we are past that time period?

    1. With more Canadians getting fully vaccinated, this will become a common question!

Always seek the advice of a local healthcare provider you trust if you have additional questions or concerns.

The Government of Canada has released new information through their COVID-19 Awareness Resources that provide guidance for individuals who have received both doses of an approved COVID-19 vaccine.

One part of the document mentions that people who are fully vaccinated can meet with a SMALL group of fully or partially vaccinated friends of family members (indoors or outdoors) without the need to wear a mask or practice physical distancing.

At this time, there seems to be consensus that reasonably-sized outdoor gatherings are considered to be safer than indoor gatherings. It’s also important to make sure everyone who will be gathering is okay with doing so and is comfortable with the type of precautions that will take place at the gathering.

There are other important specifications in the awareness resource that I encourage everyone to familiarize themselves with.

As always, following your local public health department is recommended, even if their guidelines are more restrictive since the COVID-19 status in your region may be different from the rest of the country.
