9 times out of 10, ejaculation is a good thing. (About as good as it gets, actually.) But painful ejaculation? Not just bad: Wrong. How can something that’s supposed to be all about pleasure cause a burning sensation behind or inside your balls?
Why it happens
Painful ejaculation is not uncommon, and can be caused by a number of conditions.
These include:
- Prostatitis, which inflames the prostate gland and can make it feel sore and irritated.
- Infections, including sexually transmitted ones, that inflame the area around the penis.
- Urethritis, which is swelling within the urethra (the tube that carries urine out of the penis).
- Nerve damage to the penis.
- Blockages in the ejaculatory duct, which carries semen toward its usually triumphant exit.
- Psychological issues.
What to do
Whatever the cause, it’s important for men experiencing painful ejaculation to see a doctor ASAP. Painful ejaculation is not life threatening, but it obviously affects sexual pleasure and can freak a guy out — not to mention his partner — which can lead to understandable anxiety and lower self-esteem.
Available treatments
This depends on the cause. Prostatitis and infections can be treated with prescription medications such as antibiotics and muscle relaxants. Relaxation techniques that focus on the pelvic area can also help. If the cause is psychological, counselling may help.
In short, there’s no reason for our metaphorical ski jumpers to suffer defeat. With the help of a doctor, our boys can fly higher than ever!
