The Rick Blight Leadership in Action Scholarship for Athletes
Since 2012, the Rick Blight Scholarship has awarded over $50,000 to exceptional young Canadians who show leadership in sport and contribute to the mental wellness of their teammates, communities, and themselves.
Now, 20 years after Rick’s passing, this scholarship continues to celebrate his life and values by supporting young leaders who make a difference on and off the field.

About Rick Blight
My name is Donna Blight. 13 years ago, my son Ryan, daughter Sarah, and I founded this scholarship in memory of Rick to acknowledge the important role of mental wellness in sports and academics.
Rick was born in Portage la Prairie, Manitoba in 1955. An exceptional athlete, he was drafted by the Vancouver Canucks in the first round, 10th overall in the 1975 NHL draft.
At the age of 49, Rick died by suicide, survived by our children and four grandchildren, and his three sisters (Kathy, Leslie and Kelly). We cherish his memory. Ryan is a high school teacher in Manitoba, and Sarah is a registered nurse in B.C.
We wholeheartedly encourage you to apply for the Rick Blight Scholarship. An investment in your own mental wellness and of those around you is a tribute to Rick’s legacy.
The support and generosity of the Vancouver Canucks Alumni Association and Nicola Wealth helps make this scholarship possible. We are immensely grateful.
