Dr. Larry Goldenberg Receives Distinguished Career Award

Buenos Aires, Argentina (October 20, 2016) — Dr. Larry Goldenberg is a leader in the field of medicine and a pioneer in the treatment of prostate cancer. He was honoured with a Societe Internationale D’Urologie (SIU) Distinguished Career Award for his contribution to the field of urology at the 36th Congress of Société Internationale d’Urologi held in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Earlier this year, Dr. Goldenberg was awarded the prestigious 2016 Canadian Urological Association Lifetime Achievement Award.

“I’m very proud of the programs that I’ve developed over the course of my career and nurturing the career of young scientists to achieve their own dreams,” said Dr. Larry Goldenberg. He continues his work at improving men’s health and quality of life through leadership, research and disseminating best practices in the treatment of prostate cancer at the Vancouver Prostate Centre; and awareness and education campaigns through the Canadian Men’s Health Foundation.

Dr. Larry Goldenberg completed his residency at the University of British Columbia (UBC), received his MD from the University of Toronto and his fellowship in the Royal College of Surgeons of Canada in 1984. He then went on to a very successful career as a urologic surgeon and clinician scientist at UBC.

Dr. Goldenberg has authored nearly 300 peer-reviewed articles and published a book entitled Prostate Cancer—All You Need to Know to Take an Active Part in Your Treatment, which is currently in its 4th edition and has been an important educational resource for Canadians since 1991.

Through his extensive philanthropic efforts, Dr. Goldenberg has raised over $100 million dollars in funding to support various programs he has founded, including the globally renowned Vancouver Prostate Centre, the Men’s Health Initiative of BC, the Canadian Men’s Health Foundation and the Canadian Uro-Oncology Group.

In 2012, he received a Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee medal for playing an important role in championing prostate cancer research as well as raising funds and the profile for men’s health issues. In 2009, he was awarded, the American Urological Association Distinguished Service Award and awarded the Order of Canada “for his contributions to prostate cancer research and treatment as well as for promoting public awareness of the disease.” In 2006, Dr. Goldenberg was recognized for his contributions to the urological community by being inducted into the Order of British Columbia and was appointed a member of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences.

Dr. Goldenberg has served as president of the Canadian Urological Association, the Western Section of the AUA, the North West Urological Society, and the Canadian Academy of Urologic Surgeons.
